Workplace Violence Prevention: An Emerging Priority for Cannabis Employers in 2027

Cannabis employers face unique workplace safety challenges.

Cash handling, customer interactions, product security requirements, and extended operating hours can create risks that may not exist in many other industries.

Workplace violence prevention programs should address:

  • Threat reporting
  • De-escalation techniques
  • Robbery response procedures
  • Emergency communications
  • Incident documentation
  • Manager response protocols

This is no longer just a best practice suggestion. In many markets it is becoming a legal requirement. California's SB 553 has required most employers with a public facing location, including cannabis dispensaries, to maintain a written workplace violence prevention plan, train employees, and log incidents since July 2024. Cal/OSHA's permanent industry standard, required to be adopted by December 31, 2026, is expected to take effect January 1, 2027, and will likely raise those requirements further.

Training should be integrated with broader workplace safety, security, and emergency response efforts. Organizations should also ensure managers understand how to recognize warning signs, escalate concerns appropriately, and support employees following workplace incidents.

Workplace safety extends beyond compliance. It influences employee confidence, retention, business continuity, culture, and reputation.

The strongest cannabis employers prepare employees before an incident occurs rather than reacting afterward. Protecting people remains one of the most important responsibilities any employer has.
